One Day in Bintan, Like Traveling With Family
"Some journeys end when you arrive back home. Others stay with you long after the journey is over. This was one of those journeys."
I had the pleasure of spending a full day in Bintan with Abang Rosli and his family from Malaysia, showing them some of the special places that make our island so extraordinary. What started out as a day of sightseeing unexpectedly grew into something much deeper.
🏜️ Morning: Where Sand Dunes Meet Blue Waters
We began our morning adventure at the iconic Bintan Sand Dunes & Blue Lake. Surrounded by undulating golden mounds and the calm turquoise waters of the lagoon, we took our time exploring, snapping photos, sharing laughs, and simply savoring the morning sun. There was no rush. The day had only just begun.
🍲 Midday: Seafood & Stories at Kelong Rindu Selalu
From the dunes, we continued to Kelong Rindu Selalu, where we sat together over a fresh, delicious seafood lunch. With the open sea stretching around us and the gentle breeze of a traditional wooden kelong, lunch became far more than just a meal. It was an opportunity to talk, share stories, and enjoy being in each other’s company.
🛶 Afternoon: Whispers of the Mangrove Forest
Then came a quieter side of Bintan. We ventured into the mangrove forest, traveling quietly through winding waterways surrounded by dense green canopies.
🌊 Late Afternoon: Waves of Trikora Beach
Later that afternoon, we headed toward Trikora Beach. The ocean breeze, open shoreline, and soothing sound of crashing waves provided the perfect backdrop to enjoy the final hours of our day trip together.
Not Just Places, But People
Looking back, the destinations were beautiful—but they were not what made this journey so unforgettable. It was the people.
Somewhere along the way, something unexpectedly special happened. For Abang Rosli's wife, I no longer felt like simply the person driving them around Bintan. She treated me almost like her own son. And somehow, deep down, I felt the exact same way.
As I drove them from one destination to another, it felt less like taking guests on a tour, and more like taking my own parents out for a memorable day exploring the island. There were small conversations, simple jokes, little moments of care, and a genuine warmth that was never planned.
🚢 Farewell at Tanjung Uban Port
Eventually, the day came to an end. I drove them back to Tanjung Uban Port, where they would board the ferry to Batam before returning home to Malaysia. Saying goodbye felt heavier than expected. After spending the whole day together, a quiet sense of sadness settled over us, knowing our little adventure had reached its final stop.
💬 A Message That Warmed the Heart
But the story did not quite end at the port. Later that evening, they sent me a message to let me know that they had arrived safely at their destination:
It was such a simple gesture. But to me, it meant so much. It felt like the kind of message a family member would send after a long journey—just to let you know, “We made it home safely.”
Guests Who Arrive as Tourists... And Leave as Family
That day reminded me that being a tour guide is not always about showing people beautiful places. Sometimes, it is about sharing a little part of your home with people who arrive as guests... and leave feeling like family.
Thank you, Abang Rosli and family, for making this Bintan day trip so meaningful.
I truly hope our paths cross again someday, in another journey, another place, or perhaps back here in Bintan. Until then, take care and travel safely.
Bintan may have been where our journey took place. But the warmth we shared is what I will remember.
